Beautiful business cards that truly shine

It’s been a busy time in the tinker studio of late, which has unfortunately meant that the tinker blog station has been left un-manned, apologies!

New work will be posted in the gallery in the coming days and weeks, but in the mean time here’s a sneak peak at a little project that we managed to turn around in record time thanks to a wonderful team of suppliers. The brief was to produce a short run of cards (in a matter of days) for an upcoming event that reflected the high end offerings of the client, a niche florist located in New Farm. While the possibilities would normally be endless, the time line was tight which proved quite a challenge.

Ordinarily with such a short deadline and small run of cards, the solution would be to print digitally as it is a quick and economical solution. However for this client we needed a more extraordinary finish, something that spoke to their upmarket clientele and made Bouquet Boutique stand out from its competitors. It was clear then that the only option was traditional offset print, normally a process reserved for larger print runs with longer lead times…

So, armed with ambition, a beautiful uncoated white paper stock, just 1 metallic ink, and a very meticulous printer we produced a timeless and elegant set of cards, in just 3 days! We are so pleased with the result, quite simple in its execution but so classic. While it is wonderful to be able to produce work that is on deadline and on budget, the most satisfying part for us is being able to exceed our customer’s expectations (and hearing their praise!)

The competitive edge

A strong brand presents your business as reliable, credible and trustworthy. It shows you’re serious about your product or service. It’s the face of your business and communicates instantly to potential customers about the type of operation you run/service you provide.

If customers are faced with choosing between two identical products or services, what influences their decision to purchase? Price? Not always, people will pay more for the same product or service if they trust the brand. Quality? Maybe, but this is not always detectable within a packaged product or service. So, if a potential customer knows little about your business and the level of service you provide, or that your product is of better quality than your competitors, their final decision may rest with how much they trust your brand.

Let’s say for example you sell the best window coverings in Australia; they are custom made from the finest materials (not cheap imports), last twice as long as imported versions and your installation service and warranty is second to none. Your products are a little more expensive than your competitors, but this is justified by the quality you offer. To save yourself a few dollars you’ve created your own logo design and had 500 business cards printed on a pre-designed template for a bargain price at XYZ copy shop. A friend knows a bit about websites, so he’s had a crack at that for you too. Who needs a design studio when you can do it all yourself! So, you’re set, right? Wrong! You’ve just lost your competitive edge. While you may sell the best window coverings around, if your promotional material doesn’t support this, you will be lost amongst your competitors as just another window covering business with a more expensive price.

Many businesses want to promote themselves as providers of quality products or professional services, however the message they are sending to potential clients does not support it. Consumers will often pay more for a product or service if they have confidence in the quality of the brand. We see this in our everyday lives; hairdressers, beauty products, clothing, real estate agencies, even in our supermarket aisles.

Businesses and products with strong, professional branding compared against those with a weak, unattractive or out-dated brand often have the competitive advantage regardless of who has the better offering. A diy logo design and inconsistent marketing collateral sends a negative, unprofessional message and loses consumer confidence. How does your brand stack up against your competitors?

It’s been a while…

Wow, it’s been almost 2 months since the last blog post, time flies!

The studio has been tinkering in overdrive these past few months, can you believe it’s almost April??
Highlights for the last few months include: a winter fashion parade identity; a complete brand overhaul for a truck accessories business; a trauma resource kit designed to assist teachers working with children in disaster affected schools; as well as the usual conference graphic design projects that flood in at this time of year.

It’s not all work and no play, there was a visit to the ’21st Century: Art in the First Decade’ exhibition at GoMA in Southbank in amongst the chaos. It’s well worth a visit if you live in Brisbane.
